Recognized for his work in the field of jazz studies, Bauer wrote Open the Door: The Life and Music of Betty Carter, which reviewer Craig Jolley praised as “probably the most scholarly and informative biography of a jazz singer published so far” (All About Jazz). Drawing upon his interviews with Betty Carter, various sidemen, and many others, Open the Door was published by the University of Michigan Press to critical acclaim in 2002. Drawing on his research into jazz and other African-American music traditions, Dr. Bauer enriches his Dalcroze teaching with techniques and insights gleaned from his work in jazz and blues improvisation.
