William R. Bauer, Ph.D., leads Dalcroze classes and workshops for adults and children throughout the world. An experienced and compelling clinician in the innovative educational practice known as Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Dr. Bauer has offered workshops for all levels for over 12 years.

Having studied with many leaders in the field, Dr. Bauer earned the Diploma, Advanced Studies in Dalcroze Eurhythmics (diplôme supérieur) at the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze in Geneva, Switzerland in 2023. He holds the Dalcroze License (1990) and Dalcroze Certificate (1983) from Manhattan Dalcroze Institute, in studies with Robert Abramson and Ruth Alperson.

A composer/improviser by training and temperament, Dr. Bauer studied composition with Robert Starer at the CUNY Graduate Center, where he earned his Ph.D in Composition in 1996; with Fred Lerdahl and Jack Beeson at Columbia University, where he earned his MA in Composition in 1987; and, with Tom Manoff at Manhattan School of Music’s Precollege Division in 1974-75.

Dr. Bauer’s internationally recognized research into the theory, practice, history, and culture of Dalcroze Education has been published by several peer-reviewed and non-refereed publications. Most recently, his chapter “Dalcroze Education in the United States: Building A Community of Practice,” appeared in Navigating landscapes of Dalcroze practice: Music and movement in pedagogy, performance, and therapy. Ed. John Habron, Johanna Laakkonen & Selma Odom. Martlesham: Boydell and Brewer Ltd. (affiliated with University of Rochester Press), 2025.

Recognized for his work in the field of jazz studies, Bauer wrote Open the Door: The Life and Music of Betty Carter, which reviewer Craig Jolley praised as “probably the most scholarly and informative biography of a jazz singer published so far” (All About Jazz). Drawing upon his interviews with Betty Carter, various sidemen, and many others, Open the Door was published by the University of Michigan Press to critical acclaim in 2002. Drawing on his research into jazz and other African-American music traditions, Dr. Bauer enriches his Dalcroze teaching with techniques and insights gleaned from his work in jazz and blues improvisation.

Dr. Bauer teaches music full-time at the College of Staten Island/CUNY, where he is the Music Program Coordinator and Music Events Coordinator, having directed the interdisciplinary program in American Studies for many years. As President and Executive Director of the Dalcroze Society of America (DSA) from 2012 to 2019, Dr. Bauer worked to bring the global network of Dalcroze teachers and students together to form an international community of practice.
